Add a Hit Counter to Blogger Tutorial

By Steve Warshaw

Many people have asked me how to add a hit counter to their blogs. The fastest way I know is the following:

1. Go to blogspothitcounter (see link 1 in my bio box)

2. Select Website Counter from the pull down menu on the left

3. Select a color of the hit counter you would like

4. enter in a username and email address you want to use

5. for url, enter the address of your blogger blog

6. finish the rest of the sign up and click generate Counter

7. Copy the generated code

8. log into your blogger.om account, and go to settings

9. click on template

10. click on edit html

11. scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for:

12. create a blank line under that code by putting your mouse at the end of

13. past the code into the window

14. look for the & symbol in the code you just pasted

15. directly to the right of that & symbol type the following exactly (without the : ): amp;

16. look for the code:
and change it to:

17. save.

18. You will now see your hit counter.

You can use these same set of steps to add a hit counter to the bottom of yoru blogger.com blog. just be sure the code follows well formed xml standards. if you don't know what this means, just use my instructions and you will be all set.

The great thing about the blogspothitcounter.com counter is that you can run all kinds of reports across any period of time you'd like. You can track which search engines and keywords people are using to find your site. You can also track other websites who are referring people to your blog.

Removing the Blogger Navbar

By Shabda Raaj

What is the Blogger navbar?

Blogger navbar is the *navbar* you see at the top of your blog, and which allows users to move to a next random blog. It allows user to search your blog and also to mark any blog as spam.

So why should I remove it?

It depends on your perception. I find it unprofessional, because it sometimes spoils the look of your blog. If you have a subtle layout, they might get too obvious.

Are there any problems if I remove it?

Some of your viewers might be accustomed to a navbar and may miss it. Blogger calls navbar the bloggers equivalent of remote, as it allows bloggers to switch from one blog to other.

Ok how do I remove it?

If you are using Blogger for any length of time, you must be knowing how to edit the templates. So in your template find a >style type="text/css"> tag. Just after that insert

#b-navbar {

height:0px;

visibility:hidden;

display:none

}

That’s it. Save and republish. Your navbar should be gone.

This trick was first published at blogger-templates.blogspot.com

But does this not violate my Blogger TOS?

Blogger makes no explicit term that you may not remove it. But they do not also say if you can remove it. Also this is a pretty standard trick. So doing this should be no problem.

How To Install Google Analytics In Blogger

By Richard Newman

While your current website host probably already provides some basic information, here are just a few of the reports that Google Analytics has to offer:

New Visitors vs Returning Visitors

Absolute Unique Visitors

Average Pageviews per Visitor

Average Time spent on Site

Traffic Sources (Referring Sites)

Visitors Geographic Location

Keywords used to find Your Site

Most Popular Pages

Top Exit Pages

Track Your AdWords Campaigns

First you will need a Gmail account if you don't already have one. Then you will need create a Google Analytics Account. Installing Google Analytics does not require knowledge of HTML, but there is a piece of HTML that must be copied onto every page you wish to track.

In the lower left hand side of the screen, Click on: Add Website Profile

In the box, enter your URL. (For example: www.yourwebsite.com or yourblog.blogspt.com.)

Set your Country and Time zone, and hit Continue.

Your Tracking code will then be displayed in a large box:

Highlight the code and Copy.

If you have a web designer maintaining your site, you can copy the tracking code into an email and have them copy the code into a header or footer include file. This will make sure the code is automatically loaded onto each page.
For Blogs:

If you are using Blogger, copy and paste the HTML 'snippet' of Code just before the body tag at the end of your template. The code only has to be copied once to track all of your posts.

Sign into Blogger

Click on the Layout Tab

Click on Edit HTML

It's always a good idea to back up your template before you make any changes.

Click on Download Full Template to back up onto your computer.

Scroll down to the bottom and paste the tracking code just before the body tag.

Click on Save Template at the bottom of the screen.

Back in Google Analytics you will see: Tracking code not detected under the status column.

Click on Check status or Verify Tracking Code under the Status column. (Don't worry about Conversion Goals (0) right now.) Once your tracking code has been verified, the status will change to: Receiving Data.

It will take about 24 hours before you start seeing any data.

Check back the next day and familiarize yourself will all the reports. The longer you have have Google Analytics installed, the more interesting and valuable the data will be.

How To Burn Your Blogger Feed At Feedburner

By Mike A.

You just finished your first blog post. Wow. Now how do you get it out there on Web 2.0? Google bought a feed service called Feedburner. If you go to Wikipedia and look up Feedburner, you will find comments about tracking viewers and direct RSS feed from blogs. It is all about providing your blog updates automatically to subscribers. Visitors to your blog can get an RSS feed by subscribing. One of the best providers of this service is Feedburner.

OK, that's some of the why. If you have a new blog, then you want to know the how. Go to the feedburner website. Click on register. You will be redirected to a signup page. Pick a user name (make it obscure as most of the common names have been taken). Pick a password. Specify a personal question and the answer. Click sign in. You will be redirected to your myfeeds page. As you have not burned any feeds yet, there will be none listed. After you have some burned feeds, then they will be listed on this page with the feed title, subscribers and site visitors.

To burn your first feed, type the full url of your blog where it says, burn a feed right this instant. For now ignore the podcasting and click next. You will be redirected to a page titled, Identigy Feed Source. Chose the RSS source, the seond choice offered if you are using Blogger. Click next. Now you are at a page titled, Welcome! Let us burn a feed for you. Ensure the title and the feed address are correct. Press activate feed. Now you are at a page title, Congrats, Your Feedburner feed is now live. Press next. Now you are at Get More Gusto. Check the box for, I want more have Feedburner track... Press next. You are now at the feed management page for the blog feed you just burned.

This is the page from which you can upgrade your feed with extras. To reach this page another time simply go to back to the home page of Feedburner. Sign in with your username and password. You should now be at the myfeeds page which lists all of your feeds. To go to the feed management page for a specific feed, click on the name of the feed in the list.

To complete most of the details associated with burning a feed, go to the feed management page for that feed. Click on the publicize tab. In the body of the page, make it easy to subscribe section, chickletize your website, click on the link, friendly graphic. You will be redirected to the page, Chicklet chooser. Leave the larger icon selected and scroll down to the bottom of the page. At the line, use as a widget in, use the drop down to select, blogger. Press go.

You are redirected to the Add Page Element page at Blogger. Select the correct blog in the first line. Edit the title line to your preference, I usually leave it blank. Click on, edit content link. Go down to the last line of code. I change the copy from 'Subscribe in a reader' to 'Get RSS Feed'. This is optional and your choice. Press, Add Widget. You are redirected to your blogger page, Add and Arrange Page Elements. View your blog. If you want to make changes, return to the Add and Arrange Page Elements.

Go to you Blogger dashboard, at the blog for which you have burned the feed, select the Settings tab. At Settings page, select, Site Feed. At Site Feed, be certain that allow blog feeds is set at full. In the post feed url redirect section, type your feed url. This can be confirmed by returning to your myfeeds page. If you hover over the feed icon to the left of the feed you are working on, then the feed url will be shown. When entering the url, the total url must be included.

There are additional options and extra bells and whistles with Feedburner and related services. If you follow this burn procedure every time you create a blog, you will put your blog in a position to be active in Web 2.0.
